That's a very heavy question. I'm taking a class called sociology of gender and this is one of the topics we have discussed indepth.
Females are socialized to show their emotions more, they are trained to be the softer, gentler sex. Males are socialized to believe that they will not be manly enough if they show their emotions.
To answer your question, females are more emotional because they show their emotions. But I know males have are more emotional than me, but only show their emotions in the privacy of their own bedroom or shower.

Males are taught not to show their emotions so they tend to hide them. Females exhibit their emotions which is a release for them.
