In stata programm, how can I fill out missing information in a string variable by groups?

Data is an individual panel dataset for which I have an individual id variable that is string format. For certain years I do not have the id. I would like to fill out the id missing of the person to the other years in orther to follow the person in time. The problem is that the variable is in string format. Can anyone help me with the command?
