I know that they're the state tree, but where do most of them grow naturally?

They grow naturally on the Coastal Plain, the flat sandy part closest to the ocean. Alabama, Georgia, SC, NC, and Virginia are divided into three portions: the Mountains, The Piedmont (the rolling foothills of the Appalachians) and the Coastal Plain. All of Florida is Coastal Plain. Palmettoes are native to the Coastal Plain of all these states. They are frost-hardy in Zone 8 and higher.
