To defend the lives of the Citizens.

Our Declaration of Independence spells out the purpose for which governments are created, to defend the Rights of the Citizens to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. In that order. Without Life, the other two don't matter.

The duty of the U.S. government has been answered by those who have quoted the Constitution. I would just like to broaden the scope of your question.
The two prime duties of any state is to defend its borders from external aggression and to uphold the rule of law at home. The first is pretty well self explaining. The second duty is perhaps more interesting.

Why does the rule of law matter? The first case is that it defends the citizen from abuse by a powerful state and the citizens from each other: all citizens have basic rights and responsibilities as issued by a given country's constitution. To abuse those rights is to abuse power which can be challenged either by the state or the citizen by appealling to the courts.

What of the second case? A strict system of law but weak government when faced with a powerful citizen. This has happened both in history (ie. the early Icelandic republic which by infighting amoung its citizens finally collasped and fell under the power of Norwegian monarchy) and, I would argue is happening today. The powerful citizens in question are corporations which in America have been given the same citizen rights as the individual. Naturally these bodies have far more power than individuals and as a group have far more shared interests with each other than individuals have. Thus these corporate citizens are able to shape government to their own benefit, often at the expense of both the state and individual.

Although the American Constitution was written for a Republic by rule of land-owning citizens (not a democracy) I am not sure it is able to control these new corporate citizens (who are, effectively, immortal). Thus one of the challenges for the US and other western states may well be the restoration of power to both the state and the people at the expense of some of the powers now wielded by the corporate citizen.

They quit that duty along time ago, through the bribes and the intoxication of power.
They should have been protecting us from greedy corporations who look only for profit and Will often put us in harms way to save a buck. Weather passing off bad drugs, Monopolizing and inflating energy commodities, poisoning our lakes streams, soil and even thrusting genetically modified foods on us suppressing evidence of possible long term consequences.
Defend the constitution, the right of the individual, do the will of the people, make government transparent.
Make the wealthy pay fair taxes, bust up media monopolies. Letting corporate America buy up the "Public Airways" and then consolidate was a major blow for democracy. Stealing elections all but...rrrrrrrrr...never mind you get the drift I get so angry....Mary.

The primary duty of the US government is to represent the people of the United States and defend each citizens right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. that's the simple definition. It's a bit more complex than that, though. We have 3 branches of government that has its unique responsibility. The bottom line is checks and balances.

Your best bet is to look up each branch of government and what its responsibilities are. All you will get here, for the most part, are inanities and discrepcencies.

The prime duty of our government is to protect our natural rights which among others are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, as well as those listed in the Bill of Rights. A Natural right means a right that you were born with given by God (whether you believe in God or not it is an important legal concept that says that our rights come from a higher power and our not just privileges granted by the government) they are rights that you would have if you lived in nature outside of civilization, to live how you want, to come and go as you please etc. These rights are also inalienable which means they can not be bought, sold, traded, or voluntarily given up. Which showed how slavery was such a contradiction to our system of government. These natural rights are not to be confused with civil rights which are actually privileges given to us by the government, which can be taken away at any time. Sadly however today according to our laws true natural rights are only the birthright of white males, the 14th amendment which granted rights to all races only granted civil rights, women also only have civil rights. White males actually give up their birthright when they apply for a social security number and therefore become subjects of the federal government and only given civil rights as well. Its one of the greatest deceptions of all time perpetrated by our government. No wonder why our founding fathers were so cautious when granting powers to the federal government for fear of tyranny.

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Note that is We the People that make up the government. Know the five duties of citizenship, and perform them to the best of your ability.
