Let the phlebotomist know your fears. They hear it quite a bit.
Inquire if there is a staff member available to hold your hand. But if you think you might hurt the staff member if you grip too hard you need another plan. Try turning away before your blood is drawn and grip the table or chair with your other hand. Tell yourself it will be over before you know it.
PS: I am a nurse...a 90-pound little old lady gripped my hand once and it hurt so much that my fingers were numb. I don't offer my hands anymore. A rolled up towel or pillow works just as well and I get to keep my hands.

Yes you can ask for someone to hold your hand but why not take a friend or relative with you to hold your hand. I alwasy look away from what they are doing and just talk about whatver is going on say christmas if it is that time of year or whatever. Before you know it they are done.

It can't hurt to ask. And I'm sure they'll accommodate you. A lot of people are scared of needles.

I'm sure if you let them know how you feel, they'll make some effort to distract and/or comfort you during the test.

Just go and get it done. Don't look at them doing it. You probably wont even feel it if you relax and don't watch.
