It's been sitting under a car cover for 5 years, my Dad drives it like twice a month..I used to drive it sometimes in high school...It has a 302 and 5 speed transmission...fast and a little awkward looking...it's been wrecked once while my Dad was drunk and he smashed it into a tree...ugly burnt orange paint job...we have been planning to do something with it...but between my 82 Chevy, his 86 Buick, a 77 Olds, and 84 Cadillac...we've ignorred it...as far as customizing...now my stepmother wants to evict it from the garage...so she can park her Chrysler 300C in there...what engine should we put in there to get us close to 500 horses..we don't know too many people who have modified a Javelin or AMX...so we don't want to mess up ....what new engine would fit in there without heavy modification and could put a Tremec 6 speed in there...also it sits on 15's ...what bigger size tires could we put on there and what exhaust system will fit.?..

checkout carcraft.com they have done a few AMC build ups. Made some decent power with it too. Edelbrock now makes amc aluminum heads. the perfromance parts are out there you just have to look for them. Try searching the web for some AMC groups or web sites. They will offer you the best advice when it comes to building your engine. There is no need to yank the drive train out in swap in a bunch of chevy stuff. On the other side of the coin these cars are going higher in value. If you leave it alone and restore it to the condition it was the day it left the showroom it will be worth alot more. i own a repair shop and i did one of these a few years ago,we went with an all Chevy drive train,with a 350 Chevy crate engine that delivered over 400 horses and it really ran well and the change over wasn't bad at all on it,very little modification to do on it,and the Chevy motor looks real good in there also,but a good high horse 350 will move it real good it will surprise you of what it will do,we used a 5 speed tranny ,and everything worked really well,good luck,i hope this help,s.

In my opinion, the best bang for your buck is in a chevy drivetrain. a 396 Chevy with a 5 speed Chevy tranny would do it...if you want to stick with AMC, good luck finding replacement parts for it...but try www.jegs.com or www.summitracing.com for the aftermarket performance parts. With a little bit of internal engine work, you can push 500hp out of it.
The rims, I would go maybe wider rims, but not bigger, as in 20"...that will eat up your wheel bearings and clutch.
The exhaust...well, you can fit anything under there, but a good flowing exhaust will start at a 3" pipe...

you're probable questioning of the recent FR-86, which isn't something like what you defined different than for having rwd and a V8. they had be completely stupid to construct some thing like that, everyone interior the industry to purchase a muscle motor vehicle is going to purchase American.
