We can hear the drip noise if the house is very quite, like late at night. We have, thus far, been unable to locate where the plumbing line runs through the wall. The steady-to-slow-to-no-drip sounds last for only a minute or two after the water tap is turned off. Should we be concerned about black mold growing between the walls? Is there a way to detect where the defective pipe fitting might be without breaking into a wall first. The house was built in 1989.

well if it stops dripping shortly after you shut the water off it is not your feed pipes it most likely your drain pipe, concentrate your efforts on locating the leak between the bottom of your sink to where the drain goes through the floor 90 percent of the time thats where the leak will be, ie. the sink trap or close to it.

If you have an overflow pipe going through the wall, this may be the cause.
