If you were to name your boy Alasdair, what would his nick name be? We are thinking of this name for our son but can not stand the thought of our boy being called Al (I know that some of you will respond that we should just insist that his name is Alasdair, however, my husband and I like nick names.) By the way, if you were to list three adjectives that come to mind when hearing the name Alasdair, what would they be? Thanks!

It may aid you in Alasdair's pronunciation if I further explain the name Alasdair...it is the Scottish form of the name Alexander. You may be more familiar with the name Alistair which is the English form.

Kids might be too busy beating this kid up to think of snarky nicknames for him. Alasdair = British frail asthmatic. Poor kid.

IF I were to use that name, I would probably call him "dair". But, personally, I don't like that name. It's not a little boy's name to me. It's more of an old man's name. I picture an old grampa from a foreign country with an accent sitting around telling stories of the old country. Sorry, I'm not trying to be rude or offensive, just honest. Congratulations, though.

I really do not like this name, sorry, I am not even sure I could pronounce it. When I look at it it looks like a girls name but it reminds me of Aladar from the Disney Dinosaur movie.
1.wimp
2.spoiled
3.bratty

If others shorten his name then I think "Alas" (pronounced like 'Alex' but with an "s") is lovely. In fact, I really like it a lot myself.

The name sounds British (I am thinking of Alistair Cooke) and to me signifies intellect and individuality. It actually means "protector" in Greek.

Cool name.
