Go to your control panel and click the system icon , if you do not see it look for the link that says switch to classic view. A window will open after clicking the system icon , This windows will have a hardware tab along the top of it , click on the tab and within that tab is a box that says device manager, select that. Another window will open , this window shows all the hardware your computer recognizes. find the small + that is next to "sound, video and game controllers". Click on it , if a device is not working properly a yellow symbol will be next to the device. If a yellow icon is there then double click on that item and click the troubleshoot tab. try some of the option in that window and try installing a new driver or repairing the current one. if this doesnt work , make note of the name of the device that comes up , try going to the manufacturers website and finding the driver you may need. Sorry this is such a long list of directions, you may have better luck calling technical support for windows. it may just be that your sound card is loose. A problem with a sound card is usually quite simple. it is either a driver is not installed right , the card may be damaged , or it is not supported with your other hardware or version of windows. if windows media is the only issue with sound you have try using another program to play your audio or video files, winamp is your best alternative, you can download it for free at www.winamp.com. hope this helps.

Can you hear any sound at all? Try using headphones.... Does any other sound work? CDs? MP3s...?
Right mouse button click on My Computer, Properties, Hardware tab, Device manager and see if there's a ! or ? next to your sound card. If there is DELETE the driver and reboot your computer. It should find the driver and reinstall it.
I also believe there's an option to "search the internet for a driver" which may work..... but I'd try the above first.
2) If this is recent - TRY RESTORE
Start/Program/Accessories/System Programs/Restore and restore to before this happened. (Don't go back more than a couple of days or it won't work). I'd try #1 first.....

For this I'm not positive if this will work, but you can go to the Start Menu, then go to the control pannel, then to SOUND AND AUDIO DEVICES. go under the AUDIO TAB at the top and set the default device to the name of the speaker You are using. I hope this answers your question. If not, just fiddle around in the SOUND AND AUDIO tab untill it works.
