It really depends on the person. Some individuals have body chemistry that is much more sensitive to drugs that are put into the body. This is true not just of marijuana, but for simple OTC drugs like ibuprofen or sudafed.

In Holland most people smoke grass.
Cannabis block (red or gold) is the depressive and grass or weed is the high. You do have to have a very good source of weed outside the netherlands to guarantee quality. Remember don't smoke the male plants (no THC) and don't smoke the leafs.... It gives you a headache. And if you buy seeds to grow your own, there is no-one on this earth that can guarantee 100% female plants will grow.
A word of warning: Don't smoke industrial weed. (yes its that bad)

I suspect it depends on the stress level of the smoker. Somebody bearing too much stress might get paranoid but somebody relaxed would enjoy the euphoria much more.

Does it make you "paranoid" OR does it make you 'More Alert'?
youre probably Mis-identifying the mental state.
However,it could be BOTH,...weed probably makes you More Alert AND more paranoid.
I dont smoke @ work nor before work, i dont smoke outside at night,nor walk around,...I stay in my house either alone,or with a girlfriend,...because I also get "uncomfortable". If you get noid...youre messing up the Enjoyment of smoking weed! ONLY smoke in your house. ONLY smoke with a girlfriend or smoke Alone.

I think the "paranoia" that pot may induce kind of acts as a reality check, "Oh, ya, I'm high...maybe I shouldn't do that right now."
You never see people high on weed doing some of the stupidshit drunk people do.
I think any drug acts a bit differently for everyone because of body chemistry.
