Go to pcworld.com for their recommendations. I use the sony dru-830. I got it on the internet like half price compared to the store prices. Now it is number 5, but then I do not care for burning double layer disks. Those are like $6 for one. And I do not care for the cd scriber, that writes on top of your disc. Otherwise my Sony may have been 2 and not rated 5. And when they go for the burn write speeds. Again, you have to watch it. Number 1 may burn or write 4 seconds faster than the number 10 drive. But then the number 10 drive is a way lot cheaper than number 1. You have to play around with this. Times are really sometimes a couple of seconds and a whole lot of dollars different.

Try the sony 830 cuz it is 18X with RAM. Study on the types of RAM discs and I like them.

I'd recommend HP. Lite-On has a shorter life span. I don't know about Sony or Panasonic.. The 840D HP I have is fast, reliable and not that expensive..Walmart carries them.
