houdini used to say that he could take any blow to the stomach so he would let people hit him as hard as they could to prove it. one guy hit him without him being ready for it and it ruptured his appendix. he later died from it.

He died from an infection caused by a burst appendix. He had been in pain for many days and kept refusing treatment, even though he was running a very high fever and had been told by numerous physicians that his appendix needed to come out.
By the time he finally allowed them to operate, his appendix had ruptured and he had developed peritonitis from the resulting blood infection. In those days, before antibiotics, it was nearly impossible for someone to recover from such an infection. Four days later, he underwent a 2nd operation. He died 3 days later, on Halloween day, 1926.
