Well there is already a ton of answers and I am not going to bother to look down them but for you're computer to be safe you can do the following and no matter what it will not 100% protect it but more you have the better.
Virus Scan: Norton or Mcafee
Router
Zone alarm
Spyware programs
Keep it up to date with updates
Also try and avoid places that may potently hurt you're computer
And set you're Internet security setting to what you are comfortable at
Also good Idea to have a backup/rescue disk but I would advise you to start new when making it up then you know for sure there is nothing on your computer

You are asking from "any viruses" so here it is.
Viruses communicate with a program built right into your computer called ActiveX or active exchange is a better description of it. Active X is controllable by YOU and what boxes you check off in the section of Active X . You can view your Active x this way: Go to Tools, Options, Security, and Custom. There it is in Custom your Active X Review those boxes check. You check the DISABLE box and you will not communicate with viruses. Even if a virus is in your computer it cannot get info to the outside people
Windows Explorer uses Active X The FirefoxMozilla does not use Active X thus the that browser is sater. Download it free.
It was developed for the public thru a trust grant from the Mozilla foundation and several leading universities.
I dont advocate shutting down Active X Not at all, That is used to upgrade Windows, upgrade your software and so on. Its needed thing. I advocate using another browser other than Windows Explore which is vulnerable to Viruses Trograns etc, because it alone uses Active X.

There are many various forms of software in order to accomplish protecting your computer from viruses, having said that, it also depends upon how much protection you think you need based upon how much internet browsing you do, I personally like the ones that come free and are sponsored by Microsoft by the shield update they give you.

Try some security programs .Some of them are free of charge and some of them are shareware as you know.
I recommend you to use PC cilin I m using it now.
I used to use Kapsersky all in one last year and it was really good too.
I do not advise Norton and McAfee
Panda Internet Security Suite 2007 is great too
And you can try windows one care
And if you want free programs pls try Avast free version and you can use Zone as firewall it is free too and Adware as spy catcher it has a free version too.
You should use good programs to protect your computer
An average program would protect your computer but it can not overcome all of the problems
And if you want to secure all your system you should try back up programs and I advise you Norton Ghost as back up .Try DVD media as data backup data storage do not use your HDD cause you need to make new backups as time pass to update your backups so if your system fails and you use a backup to rewind it you want your system be uptodate as possible .

Avast, click here to download http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe
It will be on as u use your computer, so everything that goes thru your computer will be scanned to remove any viruses.

every computer should have a router even if you have no plans to network them. this is because a router has a built in firewall. this is called a hardware firewall. this firewall will prevent bad people from entering your computer using a port scanner. also it keeps bad stuff from ever getting to your comp in the first place.
a software fire wall is nice but it only deals with bad stuff that's already on your computer. i suggest you get a router and soon. don't buy the cheapest one.
