Till you can get to the health food store, your best natural sources of iron are - pork, beef, liver, red meat, clams, dried peaches, farina, egg yolks, oysters, nuts, beans, asparagus, molasses and oatmeal.
When you can get to a health food store get him some spirulina tablets. Full of iron and protein!! They are a deep sea vegetable not unlike kelp or nori. A bottle of about 60 tablets will cost about $25.00. Speak to the person in the health food store, they are a wealth of information.

The dark greens are not really a source of iron. They are a source of Chlorophyll, which is almost identical to Hemoglobin, except it has Manganese (?) instead of Iron. Iron interestingly is NOT what he needs. Don't overdo the iron, because it can be toxic.

There are many great sources of iron. There are sources of heme and non-heme iron ( meat and plant sources)
Good sources include
beel liver, beef ground, round, chuck and flank, chicken , pork , tuna
plant sources
almonds, apricots and raisins (dried- more concentrated with iron), legumes- kidney and lima beans, canned beans, broccoli, spinach, dates and enriched bread.
However, intake of vitamin c, eating heme and non heme sources of iron together, and even cooking in an iron skillet will help- it will contaminate your food with iron-in a good way
I hope this helps

In addition to the foods mentioned above, try cooking in a cast iron skillet. This will leach iron into the foods that you cook.
