Tobacco is not good for you. There is a steady, long-running attempt to reduce tobacco smoking in most western countries.

Alcohol in moderation can be good for you, but it is best to consult with a doctor. I used to be allowed two pinbts of beer a day but now its one glass of red wine, if I'm up to it. Alcohol in any amount should not, of course, ever be mixed with driving. It is too easy to become impaired without noticing it. Likewise, it is too easy to become impaired whilst smoking pot. That is why, rightly, it is illegal to drive whilst impaired by either intoxicant (as well as other intoxicants such as prescription drugs).

People who smoke pot tend to be more open-minded and more inclined towards questioning authority and what passes for the norm. This is very dangerous and threatening to the wealthy, elite minority who govern societies and depend on the blind, mindless obedience of the masses. Pot's criminality and illegality are in no way linked to anything health related.

In the 1940's, mexican immigrant migrant workers would smoke pot a lot to relieve the stress of the day. They worked very hard, and had almost no rights, as unions had not really become active on the behalf of immigrant farm workers. The stress increased as their hyper-capitalist employers tried to extract evey penny they could from their businesses, even doing things that, while not technically legal, were wrong and viewed by most as cheating. Texas companies still do this; think of Halliburton, Enron, etc. Mexican immigrants backlashed, striking at those they thought of as the oppressive elite. Groups that advocated against mexicans suddenly started calling for criminalization of the Mexican's pleasure drug (think of it as the Mexican government banning tobacco because Americans liked it), and using a few cases of Mexicans committing violent crimes got significant political leverage. Under the political pressure, the US Surgeon general issued a report going against it's previous policy that marijuana was so harmless that it was fine for soldiers to smoke it when on active duty. Because of this propaganda, Congress was cowed into making pot illegal.

Racism and prejudice had a lot to do with it also.
