it depends.
Just to charge, like been playing for a while, leave it in only for max of 4 hours. And be sure to check every now and then for the light to change.
Full deplete of battery, you need to let it charge at least 6 hours
New battery, let it charge a full 12 hours before even trying to
play it.
and even for if you want to play, just plug and play charge will double the amount of time to full charge but not fully consume charge rate from the psp.

Usually charging it over night is the best. Other wise, 4 hours is the best and it will be fully charged when the 4 hours have passed.
