That's a good question... It could be that American audience of the 60's were more apt to relate to a name like "Ricky"... You have to admit, "Ricky Ricardo" has a ring to it... sounds more like a performers name. Ethnic diversity was struggling during the 60's (understatement). The idea of having a sit com with a guy name Desi, might have not set well with some of the "archy bunker" type out there.

I'm guessing the writers (Desi & Lucy produced) felt at that time the name Ricky Ricardo more easily accepted as a recognized Cuban name. Desi wasn't a common Cuban name found around the USA.
Unfortunatley no one thought how his full name becomes Ricardo Ricardo :-}
In all actuality, MX / Cuban & Puerto Ricans generally practice naming their child with the middle name being Dad's last name and the Last name is the Mother's.

The show was called I Love Lucy. It revolved around Lucille Ball aka Lucy Ricardo. Even though in real life, Desi Arnez aka Ricky Ricardo was married to her, he was just another actor in the show. Also, if you were asked which name was Cuban, most likely, you would pick Ricky over Desi.

I think Ricky is more of and American name than Desi is. They probably thought it sounded better with Ricky Ricardo than Desi Ricardo.

No good reason. I loved the chocolate assembly line show and the vedavitavegamin when Lucy got bombed on it.

they didn't know what to use for the last name, so they used the american name and the latin name and put them together. thus we have Ricky Ricardo.
