Is it because that unlike mulicellular organisms they have to perform all functions themselves and are unable to adapt/survive unless the environment is specifically suitable to them?

one-celled organisms need to live in a watery environment to live. They need to absorb all their nutrients and give off their wastes. Some can form spores to carry them over in dry times. Spores from pyramidds have been shown to grow.

locomotion, reproduction, and ingestion of nourishment that is plentiful, some have to wait for the food to come to them.
