First - You have to determine what you think you can handle, and also what your local building dept will le you do. Here (Fresno, CA), for example, to do the electrical, I had to take a twenty or 30 question test on codes etc. If you have absolutely no experience in construction etc, I would limit myself to moldings, painting and maybe drywall . Framing , concrete , electrical and even windows to some extent require knowledge of local codes
All that being said , the absolute best book I have come across ( And I have a library of about 100 books on construction, woodworking, refinishing, remodeling, etc plus who knows how many magazines) for just about every level of expertise is " How to design &build your own house" by Didonno and Sperling , published by Knopf. There are currently 23 copies (Used and new ) on Amazon.com ranging from 79 cents to 15 bucks - Read some of the comments -
I have been renovating, adding additions , woodworking etc for over 40 years , and I still have occasion to use this book as a source of info .......
