most all houses are built with wood. the outside may be covered in brick ,vinyl siding or whatever. as for the idea that brick houses are colder , not true. they are more airtight than siding and you dont have to paint them every 5 or 10 years as wood siding. cold does not cause masonry to crack if fully cured before winter sets in. if there are cracks in your brickwork its because of movement in your foundation. the brickwork rarely comes in contact with the wood sheeting on your house. i believe the main reason is cost, but if you factor in upkeep masonry is the way to go

I live in Michigan. My house was framed with wood, but the exterior is all brick. The only houses I've seen made entirely of wood are the old victorians and farmhouses, and they're usually REALLY old.

I do notice though that most of the new houses going up now are only "faced" with brick. Not like the 40-50 year old homes that used whole bricks to build.

i live in michigan. i grew up in a house made of concrete block. i have lived for the last 20 years in an old house made of wood. part of the reason brick is a challenge up here is the extreme temperature changes we undergo. brick tends to freeze and the mortar cracks as it won't flex and "breathe" with the temp changes. wood will expand and contract with the heat and cold with more flexibility.

Michigan is too far north for it to be affordable to ship the bricks all the way up there....
