This is a very interesting Question!!! The Greeks are very insecure about the MACEDONIA issue is because they know the truth behind there lies!!! If those of you that don't know MACEDONIA was divided in 1912-1913!! After the Balkan Wars!! The biggest part of land falls in todays Northern Greece!! Once this part was taken from MACEDONIA the Greek government started organizations to eliminate anything that had to do with the MACEDONIANS!!! Names of Cities, Villages, Lakes and Rivers were changed to Greek!! MACEDONIANS were stripped of their Human Rights!! MACEDONIANS were not allowed to speak their own Mother tongue or they would be punished!!! Churches were Destroyed!!! That is when the Greek PROPAGANDA started!!! And from then on even the MACEDONIANS that stayed there had no choice but to say that they are Greek and teach there kids that they were Greek in Fear for their family to survive!!! Up until late 80's if you asked a modern Greek Where is MACEDONIA? They would of told you there is no such thing as MACEDONIA!!! But in the early 90's when they started hearing that Yugoslavia was going to break-up the Greek government started saying Oh Yes!! There is a MACEDONIA but it is in Greece!! Because they are scared that the really MACEDONIA that was under Yugoslavia which still held its name MACEDONIA even that it was under Yugoslavia would want its territory back from Greece!!! If you look at what Greece has said over the years about MACEDONIA it is very different they get caught up in their lies about MACEDONIA!!! Even when MACEDONIA became a country again after Yugoslavia, the Greek had a issue with the Flag of MACEDONIA which was used even when MACEDONIA was under Yugoslavia! It is the sun of Kulesh!! But No! Again the Greek Made a Greek one exactly the same but the Background is Blue!!! LOL!! These people are insane!!! Greece did not name Northern Greece MACEDONIA until the late 80's!! When is this going to stop?? Their are MACEDONIANS todays that are looking for their basic Human rights in this area http://florina.org
becuase Greece still doesn't even recognize that their are MACEDONIANS in todays Northern part of Greece!!! Because again they are scared that these people will want their territory back!!! Check out somes sites and articles below!!!

how are you going to assert that those 3 genetic communities are on the difficulty of Greeks? they're no longer. Greeks are interior of reach to this section, slavs migrated from the north 1000's of years after. they'd be friends yet there is not any worry-free historic past. Greeks are Mediterranean, relax are slavic. Greek DNA is extra reminiscent of French than Bulgarian.

Because Macedonians have always been Greeks.
In fact Macedonians had always Greek names, toponyms, ways, heroes, gods, dialect and spread Greek Language and Civilization to the World.
Macedonians named after Greek names ALL the cities they built or renamed.
Greeks have to protect our names, our identity and our dignity; that's why we don't want any people to monopolize the name of Macedonia.

As I can understand from your nickname, you are albanian ,maybe you are an albanian from Fyrom.
Well, has anyone stolen something from you?
Has anyone tried to change your past just because he wants it?
Has anyone told lies about you?
That is why Greeks freak out with this matter.
Of course it is not the first time that Greece has to defend!
You can search all the Greek history and you will see that situations like this happen all the time.
The most recent the disaster in Smirni in 1922 and Cyprus in 1974.
Why everyone, all our neighboors want to take something, even a small piece from my country who stands here since ancient years? It is strange, isn't it?Greece is a small country,I can not understand why everyone wants to harm this country.Isn't it strange also?
But, listen to me:we were the first who came here and we have survived.Greece will keep going on carrying that magnificent civilisation that barbarians could never understand.
Macedonia is Greek!(you also know it,don't you?)

All historians in the world agree that ancient macedonia was part of Greece. This is an indisputable fact.
Greeks are worried that by naming a country 'macedonia' this country will be confusedly linked to the original macedonia which of course has nothing to do with.
Facts such as naming the international airport of that country 'Alexander the great' and the bulgarian dialect that the people speak there 'macedonian' contribute to the confusion.
I have seen myself people in the states that are completely ignorant of world history prior to the colonization era. These people just by looking on a map a country named 'macedonia' will wrongly link it to the original macedonia.
Greeks are worried because they are just too proud of their history. Pehaps the bulgarian/slavic people that created this hoax country are not so proud of their own history and this is why they try to build a national identity on somebody else's history.

Their history. Greece sees Macedonia as it's possession. The events over the past decades has given soverignty to Macedonia. In 91' I believe. The Mountains in the south are divided as well which creates problem with trade and commerce. Macedonia uses Greeces ports for import/export and for years the Greeks cut them off from this. Going further back, Philip of Macedon and Alexander have cultural superiority issues that go deep. It's all silly because they are the same people historically. It's just another example of overblown ethinic relations that plague the Balkans. It's all pride.

because they have taken a big part of Macedonia as we know it now after the ww2 and they don't want to admit some other historical facts because they are afraid Macedonia will claim that part that rightfully belongs to them...

(I agree in general with strider.)
Once someone reads the real facts and a little history he immediately realizes that the Greeks are right!
The authentic(Greek) Macedonia is in Greece. The entire north Greece is the province of authentic Macedonia. (From there Alexander the Great started his epic campaign and he managed to spread the Greek language and culture throughout the known word.)
Since the ancient Greek kingdom (of Macedonia) the Greek word “Μακεδονία” (Macedonia) was used to describe a geographical region of Greece (later it applied in a larger area in the Balkans but always slightly different than the Greek original) and the term “Μακεδόνες” (Macedonians) was always used to describe a Greek tribe.
In 1991 a small Slavic/Albanian state emerged in the Balkans after the collapse of Yugoslavia. That small state decided to use as an international name the Greek name “Macedonia” and of course that caused and still is causing confusion with authentic Macedonia in Greece!
The new republic of (Slavic/Albanian)Macedonia is actually called “Makedonija”. This is their authentic Slavic name that they are using for themselves and only internationally they use the Greek name “Macedonia” {to be more precise they use the English translation of the Greek name “Μακεδονία” (Macedonia)}.
The problem WASN’T of course that a Slavic/Albanian nation was using a Greek name (that argument has nothing to do with the true!!) but instead the Slav-Macedonians (and not the Albanian-Macedonians) were presenting the history of authentic(Greek) Macedonia as theirs and there were even few who actually claim rights against authentic(Greece) Macedonia of Greece.
Greece reacted immediately and United Nations and European Union has forced the state of Slavic/Albanian-Macedonia (Makedonija) to negotiate with Greece in order to reach to an acceptable name for INTERNATIONAL USE {For those who don’t know “Republika Makedonja” is officially translated by United Nations (and officially recognized by United Nations and European Union) as Former Ygoslavic Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). NOBODY HAS ASKED THEM TO CHANGE THEIR NAME. Their name remains (Makedonija!). Some countries like USA in their “two parts” relations they use the name “Macedonia” (never internationally!!) but they will recognize any mutually agreed name by UN resolution}.
Also a lot of people don’t know that the international name of a state is decided by international law, international agreements and treaties under the authority of United Nations! You can not choose what ever name you like for international use! An example is what happened to Austria! After the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and from 1918 it was known as the Republic of German-Austria (Republik Deutsch-Österreich), but the state was forced to change its name to "Republic of Austria" in 1919 peace Treaty of Saint-Germain! After the war every state that wishes to enter the United Nation had to make sure that its international name wasn’t violating the interest of any other country and was not against international law!
This is the case for Slavic/Albanian Macedonia (Makedonija). It can use its own name (Makedonija) but for international use it has to follow the UN resolutions!
Still there are talks between the two states under the United Nations authority and there are efforts to reach a commonly agreed resolution.
There were some official statements from the Government of Slavic/Albanian Macedonia
“the first President of the republic of (Slavic/Albanian)- Macedonia, Kiro Gligorov said: “We are Slavs who came to this area in the sixth century ... we are not descendants of the ancient Macedonians" (Foreign Information Service Daily Report, Eastern Europe, February 26, 1992, p. 35). On 22 January 1999, Ambassador of the (Slavic/Albanian)- Macedonia to USA, Ljubica Achevska gave a speech on the present situation in the Balkans. In answering questions at the end of her speech Mrs. Acevshka said: "We do not claim to be descendants of Alexander the Great … In reply to another question about the ethnic origin of the people of (Slavic/Albanian)- Macedonia, Ambassador Achevska stated that "we are Slavs and we speak a Slav language”.
On 24 February 1999, in an interview with the Ottawa Citizen newspaper, Gyordan Veselinov, (Slavic/Albanian)- Macedonia's Ambassador to Canada, admitted, "We are not related to the northern Greeks who produced leaders like Philip and Alexander the Great. We are a Slav people and our language is closely related to Bulgarian." He also commented, “There is some confusion about the identity of the people of my country".
Also, Mr Gligorov declared: "We are Macedonians but we are Slav Macedonians. That's who we are! We have no connection to Alexander the Greek and his Macedonia… Our ancestors came here in the 5th and 6th century" (Toronto Star newspaper, March 15, 1992).
The above statements should be enough to show that Slavic/Albanian-Macedonia is willingly negotiating with Greece for an acceptable solution.
Again I repeat that nobody has requested them to change their constitutional name (Makedonija). Also Greece is fully recognizes the authentic(Greek) Macedonians since they are pure Greeks.
Greece has no intention to interfere with what the Slav-Macedonians or the Albanian-Macedonians think for themselves. Greece only protects its land and the history of authentic(Greek)-Macedonia.
And I close with a small quote from the words of the ancient (Greek) Macedonians:
(... Had I not greatly at heart the common welfare of Greece I should not have come to tell you; but I am myself Greek by descent, and I would not willingly see Greece exchange freedom for slavery.... If you prosper in this war, forget not to do something for my freedom; consider the risk I have run, out of zeal for the Greek cause, to acquaint you with what Mardonius intends, and to save you from being surprised by the barbarians. I am Alexander of Macedon."
(Herodotus, The Histories, 9.45)
"But Alexander (the great) said, `If I were not Alexandros, I should be Diogenes'; that is to say: `If it were not my purpose to combine barbarian things with things Greek, to traverse and civilize every continent, to search out the uttermost parts of land and sea, to push the bounds of Macedonia to the farthest Ocean, and to disseminate and shower the blessings of the Greek justice and peace over every nation, I should not be content to sit quietly in the luxury of idle power, but I should emulate the frugality of Diogenes. But as things are, forgive me Diogenes, that I imitate Herakles, and emulate Perseus, and follow in the footsteps of Dionysos, the divine author and PROGENITOR of my family, and desire that victorious GREEKS should dance again in India and revive the memory of the Bacchic revels among the savage mountain tribes beyond the Kaukasos...' "
(Plutarchos, On the Fortune of Alexander, 332 a-b)
