This is coming from a mom....bring diapers in sizes 1 or 2 (newborn diapers are so small and the infants generally are not in them for long) , wipes, lotions, bath products, onsies in varying sizes (i found that you can never have too many) The gift doesn't have to be expensive, but all those newborn clothes get grown out of so quickly and some never even get worn, if you want to give something that will last, give a warm crib blanket, or even a baby book, or a gift certificate for the family to have new family pictures taken after the little one's arrival.

Well if you're a guy the best thing for you to do is get one of those gifts that are prewrapped with stuff. Just go to walmart or kmart and you can go in the baby section and see tons of stuff... believe me, whatever you bring it will be used...

As a mom, I would say, the thing I needed the most was diapers. Its a simple gift, but its the only thing I could never have to much of. Hit up babies r us and buy a few of the boxes of bulk diapers. And dont forget the mommy too. Not only will baby need diapers, but mommy will need something to make her feel better.
