wow! don't be so naive. they are usually drinking the real thing. you think most actors aren't a little "buzzed" on boose or pills when they get on screen? don't be silly.
but don't tell your kid that. say coke or water or something. in all honesty, i have met fellow actors who don't want a substance-this is usually when shoots are in the AM. they just ask for what ever drink they want pending that it's not visible (other wise they have to take something the same color-like coke for whisky). this only happens about 5% of the time. most people like a hard drink bc it makes them "flow" better!

We're involved in community theater (in fact, my wife is the prop queen -- she had to make a simulated turkey out of paper mache and florist's foam for our holiday production of "A Christmas Story") and we also volunteer at the high-school drama class, so the situation comes up where we have to simulate something alcoholic that can't be the real thing.
We've found that a mix of iced tea and apple juice, with a dash of vanilla extract, looks so much like whiskey that it almost got some kids in trouble at a rehearsal when a teacher saw them drinking it! Fortunately, a "well, SMELL it" was enough to prove that it wasn't whiskey. And this combination of ingredients was also very pleasant to drink, which makes it easier for the actors.
Clear spirits (gin, vodka, light rum) are easy, of course -- just use water. For wine we've used a mix of cranberry and grape juice, blended to get just the right color. (And again, it's pretty tasty!)
Though your kid might be interested to know that in at least one movie, the actress insisted on actually drinking wine in a scene that called for it. The movie is "Babette's Feast," and the star is French actress Stephane Audran. In the climactic scene of the movie, she prepares a magnificent feast to thank the village that took her in ten years before, and while she is preparing the meal she sips a glass of red wine from time to time. She insisted that -- while the rest of the actors were given fruit juice and colored water -- she be given wine, claiming that she wasn't a good enough actress to fake it. I've always figured that it was really because she's French, and would have shuddered to drink something that LOOKED like wine but WASN'T.
Something else your kid might enjoy: when an actor eats ice cream, it's usually mashed potatoes. The hot lights on a film set would make real ice cream melt in seconds, and if they have to do take after take the "ice cream" has to stay looking good. So the traditional substitute is mashed potatoes, colored to look like whatever flavor they're supposed to be eating. Pretending to be eating a chocolate sundae while actually eating mashed potatoes -- now THAT'S acting!

I heard that they're not aloud to drink REAL alcohol on T.V. so if it's wine than it would most likley be grape juice or cranberry juice..and if it's beer than they might use apple juice and make it look fizzy on top like beer would look

I beer, probably salted Mt Dew, if colored spirits, probably tea, something non-alcoholic otherwise the actors would lose their touch, although I'd bet some of them do drink the real thing!
