I had two guys try to rob me when I was on my way home alone from a night out with friends in Chicago. I had just come down the stairs from the EL platform in my neighborhood… still inside the station, which is unmanned at that hour of the morning… something like 2:30AM… and of course nobody else was around. They approached me and one of them said something about me “owing” him money. I only had eleven bucks in my pocket (wasn’t even carrying a purse), and I didn’t figure they’d be satisfied with that, so instead of handing over the money, I mouthed off saying I didn’t owe them sh1t. The thing was, we were only about 20 feet from busy Irving Park Rd, sure to have traffic and a pedestrian or two, but of course the station was between us and the street, so we were out of sight to any passers-by. The one guy punched me in the face, but the blow glanced off because I was turning toward the other guy at the same moment… I basically flipped out screaming and swearing at the top of my lungs, hoping they would be scared of someone overhearing. It worked. The guy loosened his grip on my arm and I pulled myself away, made it through the turnstile, and continued running at full speed two and a half blocks to my apartment. They didn’t follow me; they stayed in the station, probably waiting for their next victim. There are a few things that really stick with me about the event… the first being all of the scary what-ifs if they hadn’t “let” me go. There’s no way I would have had a chance against both of them. It was also surprising that I had definitely been drunk when I got off the train, but I was one hundred percent sober when I arrived home… I guess adrenaline counteracts alcohol. Then there was the lack of any sense of urgency about it when I called the cops. Granted, I was unhurt and not in danger, but if they had acted quickly, they could’ve caught those guys… I gave them all the info they needed, and the two couldn’t have made it far in the couple minutes it took me to get home and pick up the phone. The woman who took my call wasted valuable time asking for more information as to where the incident took place… but there really is only one Brown Line EL station on that road. She kept at it for twenty minutes as I not-so-patiently gave her every cross-street, landmark, etc… never once even putting me on hold to radio out to see if any officers were in that area. I finally told her to look at a friggin’ map and hung up. As it was, I read a story in the paper a few days later about a series of robberies taking place along that EL line… and naturally the two suspects were still at large. And of course it’s painfully obvious in retrospect that I should have spent that eleven bucks on a safe cozy cab ride right to my door.

when i worked in this little store, a guy came up to the counter one sunny morning and asked for a pack of cigs. When i reached up to grab the smokes then put them down on the counter, he had his little dick laying on the counter. I wish i had a fly swatter.Ha. Needless to say he got the smokes for free, I was to busy nervously laughing, and thinking what balls as there was a police station right beside me. He got away , smokes, balls and all.
