Your tank water is bad. GF don't kill each other but they will eat their dead comrads. They will get sick too from eating the dead guy. You should have quarintined the sick one right away. Change water and correct the problem. You might loose the whole community, the disease will go directly internal for the other fish, and once that happens they usually die. Do some research, buy a fish keeping book and read it. You just don't know what your doing.

Errr... where to start.........

Okay, if you have eight goldfishes I hope you have at least a ninety gallon tank, other wise you are overstocked and your fish will die.

I assume you have a ten to twenty gallon tank, though. You should have only one goldfish in it if that is true. Goldfish produce lots of ammonia, and you probably haven't been changing out half the water daily. If you had a huge tank, changing half the water once or twice a week would be sufficient. Your water is probably very high in ammonia, and maybe nitrite and nitrates too. Your chocolate goldie probably succumbed to ammonia poisoning and became ill. Healthy fish will pick on sick fish. Goldfish don't attack and kill each other in general. It died and the other fish ate it. That's what fish do.

You need to reconsider your stocking plan. If you can return the goldies you should, unless you have an enormous tank. You need to read up on the nitrogen cycle and aquarium maintenance, then get some fish that are appropriate to the size of your tank. I recommend www.myfishtank.net as a good place to learn about fishkeeping.

In the meantime, do a huge water change, being sure to match the temp and to use dechlorinator. Use a gravel vacuum to do the water change, and vacuum the bottom really well.

I think it could have been some kind of bacteria. I've never heard of goldfish being very territorial unless it was in a small area. I really hope you dont have them in a bowl because thats considered animal cruelty in alot of countries.

Another scenario: The goldfish saw him as an intruder and we're trying to fix the problem.

Another possible scenario: He was already sick, the bacteria flourished on his tail while he was in your tank and he died and the other fish instinctively ate him.

Thats all I got lol. Good luck?

Advice: Keep your fish away from the brown ones. >.> They appear to be extremely rascist.

Goldfish usually are not aggressive. How big of a tank do you have? Goldfish require a large tank. With this many fish I would think that you need a minimum of a 50 gallon tank. If they are in too small of a space, they may be too crowded and fighting for space.

Wow, I've truly never seen that much aggression in goldfish, even with just males. All of a sudden, they're just gone... I wonder if maybe sickness killed him, then the other fish ate him...

It sounds a bit like finrot that your fish had. Fish do fight but i dont think they would kill each other. I lost 2 lastweek with finrot and there tails was nearly gone. If any of the rest go like this treat them with finrot

Yes, it's possible.

I remember once I won this fish on my birthday

then I brought it home and put it with the rest of my gold - fishes.

I left for a while, came back to check on them, and the new one

was dead.

Also, it could be that one of them is getting more food than the other, one may be stronger than the other, and feels the need to kill. Kind of like Osama Bin Laden. =[
Hate that horrible person.

goldfish will pick at each other. i don't think they intentionally kill each other though. what happens is they pick at a fish which weakens their slime coat -- bacteria gets to the fish through the weak spots and kills the fish and goldfish will eat anything.

you should clean all your water anytime you have a death in your tank. it makes for lots of water problems.

If they are all males then yes it is posible b/c they are teritorial, so it would be a good idea to get 2 bowls!
