It's a done deal...The REAL ID Act of 2005 is Division B of an act of the United States Congress entitled Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense, the Global War on Terror, and Tsunami Relief, 2005, Pub. L. No. 109-13, 119 Stat. 231 (May 11, 2005)[1]. This controversial legislation is intended to deter terrorism by:
Establishing national standards for state-issued driver's licenses and non-driver's identification cards, among a number of other things.
After May 11, 2008, "a Federal agency may not accept, for any official purpose, a driver's license or identification card issued by a State to any person unless the State is meeting the requirements" specified in the Real ID Act. States remain free to also issue non-complying licenses and ID's, so long as these have a unique design and a clear statement that they cannot be accepted for any Federal identification purpose. The federal Transportation Security Administration is responsible for security check-in at airports, so bearers of non-compliant documents would no longer be able to travel on common carrier aircraft.

It's not going to happen. The REAL ID is the closest we'll get. Congress is requiring every state ID and driver's licence to carry certain infromation and be attached to a national database. But some states (New Hampshire and Maine) have resisted meeting the acts requirements.

Your federal I/D. card is already in place and operational. You can not functrion in the U.S. economy in a normal manner without it. There is no need to issue an actual encoded card... right now every newborn is identified by DNA and issued a Social Security number by law. That number accesses a new and improved database with your DNA and ALL your personal info (Patriot Act, thanks). Within 30 years every resident of the U.S (legal or not) will be tied to the DNA/SS database, and soon now we will have DNA scanners that will work from a distance… in the works as I write this. “Your papers are not in order” is already here, just try traveling (driving) anywhere without them. Old Russians living in the U.S. today just shake their heads and I have heard them many times say…”We had more personal freedom in the USSR”. I don’t got to show you no stinking badges…. (?)

I think it's ridiculous, another intrusion into our privacy, probably un-constitutional (not that THAT necessarily makes any difference anymore), and will turn into a beaurocratic nightmare.
How far away can it be before the authorities will be asking for your "papers" everywhere you go; just like in the old Soviet Union.

Not much. Too much like "big brother" for me. Besides, I already have a Social Security number...that's enough for me.
