Depending on the phone there should be a place where you can check about free memory. For nokia you go to memory in the settings menu and then u can check free space. but some files are not supported so check if ur phone reads .mp3 or .wav or .mdi u need to convert the files so that the phone can read them.

To free up space move all your contacts to simcard, and delete any program you dont use. Also compact any music files you want to put on. If your phone takes a memory card i suggest you invest in one. The internal memory on a mobile is usually minimal.
