i got 3 radical 6

why/how did the 6 become a 2 in the answer?

Your answer is correct.

√54 = √9√6

√54 = 3 √6

3 radical 6 is the answer: are you sure that the problem wasn't asking for the cube root--in that case the answer in the book would be correct. If this is not the case, the book happens to be wrong in this case: it happens.
