A knife for what? Kitchen, survival, folder, sheath knife?
I've got a few Swedish fixed-blade knives that I think will last "forever". You can get different models from $9-$28 that are plain, simple, easy to hold and use, and are almost indestructible under normal/survival situations. They take and hold an edge well, and you can get different models in stainless or carbon, depending on your preferences. I use one of them as a paring/utility knife in the kitchen.
Take a look at http://www.ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeCatalog.html
I've bought from them with no problems. If you want something fancier, look around at the rest of their site - they have some others that are nice looking for more money, but still pretty reasonable.
Even if you settle on some other ultimate knife, check these out. Unless you want some psycho killer Rambo fantasy knife, and are good with a fixed-blade, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
If you want a good but reasonably-priced folder, these might be worth consideration:

For a pocket jackknife, my favorite is a Victorinox "Swiss Army Soldier Red Alox" (Alox is an anodized aluminum, and they're cross-hatched textured). It's plain, simple, lifetime warranty, comes with and keeps a razor-sharp edge, and is light and slim. I can't seem to find the red Alox model anywhere online - you might still be able to find them in a knife shop, or you can go with the silver (plain) one. They have simpler models if you're really looking to cut down on weight/size.
I've got a Boker liner-lock folder that I love. It's a little on the large size for a pocket knife, and the butt end is a little pointy for pocket carry. But, it feels good in the hand, looks really good, keeps an edge, and opens and closees like silk one-handed. I keep it handy in the house for miscellaneous cutting chores.

It's a good thing you said that money is not an issue as a good set of knives is an investment and properly cared for will last a lifetime. Now the first thing you need to know is that price does not always mean quality. Brand names also do not mean quality . Take Henkels for example, there are many different types out there. Avoid any Henkels International brand (the one with the one man on the logo). These are crap blades and they will not last. If you want a better blade, try a Henkel's 4 star, professional or another one that has the two men on the logo. Wusthof Trident knives are good. Sabatier knives are good (if you can find them). But for the absolute best, see if you can find yourself a folded, forged knife. When you go for a stamped knife it will lose it's edge very easily, you can use the steel to "sharpen" it but every so often you will need to sharpen it using a stone. A forged knife is one that has been heat treated to make it harder, this keeps the edge a lot longer than the regular stamped blade. A folded knife is one with a mixture of hard and soft steel which gives it an incredibly sharp edge that will last longer than a forged knife. I will say that I have a chef knife made in this fashion and it's the absolute best that I have. It cost me $300, I've had it for the past 10 years and it's still as sharp as it was the day I bought it.

How much money can you spend? If you have money, get Wusthof, this knife will last you a lifetime and alsois lifetime warrantied. If money is an issue henckels are pretty good knifes and you can get decent set at costco and wont break the bank. Hope this helps.

www.coldsteel.com These are some of the strongest, unbreakable, sharpest, durable, and craziest knives and blades ever. They are a little expensive though.

JA Henckels kitchen knives are famous worldwide for their quality and design. I have many but the forged knives are my favorite.

Henkle is a good brand. You could also look into buying a ceramic knife.
