It's been my ultimate dream to study abroad in Australia (specifically, Sydney). I'm in college now studying women/gender studies, and the programs offered in Australia are actually some of the best for my major. However, I've been discouraged to go there for a year because of what's been going on, like the drought and so forth. Given the recent events and situations that are going on in Australia (specically Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane), do you still think it would be good idea to go there (if I do go, I would go February of next year and come back November)? Any feedback or information would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Wow what a way to go for a study necessary for your major. I lived in Sydney for 3 years, and the rest are in Brisbane, both my children studied in Australia, they loved it so much they stayed there and their lives are real good. GO FOR YOU DREAM you may only have one chance such as this one, why not. The weather in Australia is reverse of USA so Feb when you go it is still summer there. The winter is not that bad, very mild and sunny everyday. Goodluck to you endeavor.

I studied for a semester in Sydney and it was the best thing I did in college. While the fires certainly make a lot of news, they are typically in the suburbs and not in the heart of the city where you would be. Plus, if you'll be there from February to November, you'll miss the hottest parts of the Australian summer. The fires they have there are due to the dry weather and heat (much like in California here). I would go and enjoy it...you'll never have another opportunity like it.

If I was you I would defintly go there. It will be an experience that you will remember the rest of your life. And think about this if you dont go you will always wonder what it would of been like if you would have gone. I have always wanted to go to Italy and I had a chance to go there for a study abraod program but my parents talked me out of it. I was extremely pissed that I didnt go so now next year when I graduate from college Im buying a fricken plane ticket and visiting there for a couple weeks. But visiting a differnt country will give you a new experience on life.

We dont have those years in Australia. Bachelors are only 3 years long and most students have little in the way of options in choice of subjects - thats determined by the name of the degree (e.g. Bachelor of Arts (Asian Studies). If your university has an exchange program with an Australian university its possible - the credit allowed for each subject taken in Vietnam and Australia has already been worked out.

I wouldn't let the drought stop you from going, if that's really your only concern. (I do believe it's a example of how more environmental management is necessary, though). But I would absolutely go to Australia.
