Takes software -- Google the words DVD Ripper and read the features of the software availble there. Pick a software package some are free some only free for a short period of time. You want a package that will allow you to back up your DVD to your hard drive. Back up is important because you are not allowed to copy some movies. You can then create a backup copy of your dvd's on your hard drive. But a word of caution -- Movies take up a lot of hard drive space. 4.5 to 8 gb each movie.

Simply copying the files only works if the disc has a simple tree, without dummy sectors and other goodies. You need a program like DVDDecryptor to rip the entire dvd to a folder on your hard drive. Then, you can play it from there. However, keeping a 4-8gig DVD on your HD isn't needed because your computer can handle higher compression than a dvd player can. Therefore, after ripping it with DVDDecryptor you can frameserve it with DVD2AVI and then re-encode it into an .avi video file with the XVID MPEG-4 scheme.

I believe you just copy the DVD to whatever folder you want. It should play from there... take out the DVD to test it.

Download DVDShrink and just follow the instructions. If you want to watch it on your computer just go to file and open and it should be there. You can also burn a copy with it.
