For a college student Laptops within range 700 to 1000 is fine.(Usually they are Dell laptops). If you want to go for 1000-1500 You can go for Sony Vaio with the same config as Dell.

Toshiba laptops are dependable and durable, and there are well within that price range. Best buy has them as low as $699. Gateway and Dell also have models that range from $500- $600 if you don't want to spend much at all.
I'd start with Best Buy, then check out Dell.com to see if they can match the cost/performance.
All of them should be good enough to power through most apps. If you get a cheaper one, I'd spring for some extra RAM.

That first answer sounds about right. Be sure to:
1. Check with the intended college for recommendations--they
may have specifics or even a special card required for use
on their campus.
2. DEFINITELY consider the cost of an extended warranty for
damage AND theft. Will the warranty cover battery replacement and how many times during the life of the warranty.
3. Buy from a reputable store or dealer. How will service be handled? Being without a computer on campus can be a real
problem!

The HP Pavilion DV6000 is a great notebook for a college student, with configurations between 949 and 1249, you can configure it to your specific needs and desires and still have a great quality, yet inexpensive notebook!
I personally have a DV6125se, which is a slightly different model than the dv6000 and has a few more nicer features and a better look. The DV9000 notebook may be an option you would like better as it has a wider screen and a built in number pad.
These notebooks can be found Here

I used to sell Dell Laptops to a lot of college students. The most popular was the Dell 1405 or 1410.... Both are really good and they're the perfect size for college students..... If you can afford it, get the accident insurance..!!!! Lots of things can happen in a dorm.

It all depends on what you want it to do and what programs you want to install on it. Because lots of good laptops start from 500-600- dollars and go up from there depending what programs you want on them. But I have a CompaQ and it's good enough for what i do in college. SO get on that's good then just add enough for what you need and don't over do it because the more you install teh more it costs.
