There's no set rules, mainly because carpets aren't all the same. But I would start with a cleaner called "Krud Kutter" (inexpensive and easy to find at Home Depot and Lowes, hardware stores, etc). It cuts oils and will go through most stains. But try it in a small hidden spot to make sure it won't pull the stain from your carpet, too. Wool carpets won't like any cleaner on them and will probably end up needing to be professionally patched to avoid spreading the stain.

You are not to use strong caustic or harsh chemical sprays on carpet, in the long run that will harden the fibers of nylyon and polyester and show up as a spot that is discolored from the rest of the carpet.
Use a dab or two of Kerosine on a clean white lint free rag. That is a solvent for old english and it will disolve it and you can wipe it out without any short or long term damage to the carpet.
