Rome, Italy - Via Appia or Appian Way
The Appian Way (Latin and Italian: Via Appia) was the most important ancient Roman road. It connected Rome to Brindisi, Apulia in southeast Italy. Its importance is indicated by its common name, recorded by Statius[1]:
Appia longarum teritur regina viarum
"the Appian way is commonly said to be the queen of the long roads"
The Romans attached great nobility to the road from its usefulness to them in the Republican period and from the circumstances and method of its construction. The Italian Livy wrote of it as the paradigm of all subsequent Roman roads, the very symbol of the republic, bringing order to Italy and peace and freedom to its peoples.

The first motorway built was the Autostrada dei laghi, A08, inaugurated on September 21, 1921 in Milan.
It linked Milan to Varese. Piero Puricelli, the engineer who designed this new type of road, decided to cover the expenses by introducing a toll to be paid by whoever used the motorway.

List of Italian Motorways

German Autobahn history dates back to 1913 when construction first began. The Autobahn is considered to be the world's first motorway. Initially it was only a short 12 mile stretch near southwestern Berlin. That bit of German Autobahn history remains to this day, serving as a race track. During the 1920s and 30s, Italy built its first Autobahn while Germany created the first automobile-only roads; these went from Cologne to Bonn and from Düsseldorf and Opladen. By the end of World War II, the Autobahn network covered an area of over 1,300 miles. It's expanded steadily over the years and by 2004 it grew to 7,500 miles.
The one important thing to keep in mind is that it's actually illegal to run out of gas while on the Autobahn.

Deutschland, it was the Third Reich who constructed the first.
We tend to forget they did a lot of GOOD things, too.
