My daughter recently saw Happy Feet and decided she wants a penguin as a pet. Is that even lrgally possible? and if so, How would I go about getting one?

I live in warm weather so obviously I would end up getting an African penguin if possible. I wasnt planning on doing this, I just wanted to know if it was possible and where I'd go to get one and etc.

yahoo! or google "penguins" or "penguin care" and you'll find many substitutes...stuffed animals, videos, clothing, books.

visit a zoo.

now is the time to teach conservation and advocacy of animals...not how to illegally (or even legally) obtain exotic pets that can't be properly cared for in a human home environment (esp. long term when the interest is usually lost).

Why not get a cat, dog or fish with penguin markings and give it a favorite penguin name?

It can be done, legally, if you're really committed. Maybe you've seen the video of the penguin who runs errands in Japan. However, the financial investment would be extreme - buying a pool plus slide, stocking fish for your penguin to eat, finding a veterinarian who knows about these exotic animals. There are penguins bred specifically to be pets, so they're not snatched from their environment, but you really would need to live in the country to have the room for this pet - suburbs or city life wouldn't cut it. Penguins have to be walked for exercise every day, just like a dog.

If your daughter is any younger than a teenager, take her to the zoo to see a penguin. Find out if they do behind-the-scenes days so she can see a penguin up close and learn about them.

I want a penguin as a pet too, but not until I have the land for it.

Neither. They would cost a fortune and would likely bring nothing but trouble unless you were a wealthy and dedicated exotic pet keeper. I know people who had monkeys and they suck. Not only are they not as tame as you imagine (even if they like you!) they have a strange smell they piss and **** where they sit and they eat by chewing and spiting and flicking they food everywhere! My old nanny who used to babysit me got a spider monkey with a crippled hand and even tho it was relatively gentle and 'nice' it still screeched and hooted morning and evening and still pissed where it sat for more than half and hour...and it stunk I remember it ended up dying of a cold or something after 8 years...And some friends of mine bought a squirrel monkey from a drug dealer and they sold it cheaply to a Biker after ,like 3 months of trying to train it to go in its cage at night and stop biting them and piss/**** on the curtain rod, ceiling lights, top of the fridge -just way too much trouble! As for a Penguin you have to have a zoo level habitat for itand I doubt you or anyone could afford that.

i don't think you would want a penguin as a pet. i saw "Happy Feet" also, and it did turn me on to them, but i didn't want one. your daughter will grow out of wanting one, if that's what your worried about. also like all exotic pets, it would be very hard to learn the specific requirements for it, get the right food, and train it.
my advice is get a more common pet for your daughter.

Yea it is. You would have to go about and get a license to have those kind of pets. Im not sure how. Then purchaseing one leaglly would be extremely diffucilt. I wish my parents would of gotten me a pet wolf when I wanted one. That way it would let me eat first then when anyone else tried to eat before it did it would attack them while I sat back and laughed.. ah child hood dreams.
