AVG is free for personal use and can be found at http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/. I'd also suggest BitDefender's free online scan at http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html. I've found it catches stuff that nothing else does. For spyware, I'd do the online scan from Ewido at www.ewido.com.
