i do not envy you the responses you are going to get to this question. Brace yourself. If i had to guess, i would say that you may have had some bad experience with a person of color or maybe even several bad experiences with people of color in the past that have swayed your view of all of them. i myself do not carry this feeling, but i have had so many, many bad experiences with black folk who still want to blame white people for their suffering in the past. Racism is still so very alive and well, but it seems to very much go both ways now. And that seems to be widely accepted in society. i have many, many black people that i just love dearly too. If i am walking in a bad part of town (that is to say, low income, properties not well kept) i tend to be cautious of anyone i see. i will say hi if i pass someone, and i make eye contact and smile, but i know the feeling you speak of...i get it in the pit of my stomach and sometimes even an adrenalin rush. And it does not matter WHAT color they are. Maybe you could seek therapy and try to find out what is at the root of your feelings. i would personally suggest that you deliberately surround yourself with people of color and talk to them...even make friends with them. i think you will find that there are many fine, intelligent, classy people of color and just a few out there are giving the majority a bad name. Just like white people. Hang in there..and best wishes!

Lots of heat in this one!
This is an honest question from someone who I guess really doesn't want to be racist, and probably isn't from a logical point of view.
However, if I were black I would probably find it quite hard to answer it dispassionately. It would seem like a personal insult recalling many generations of exploitation and abuse. The past is not that far away. So I don't think you should be surprised nor dismayed at some of the quite strident answers you got. I'd also guess that you knew that already.
I think there are two answers:
(1) Socially received prejudice - several people mentioned that.
(2) The natural human instinct for tribalism, which is even more acute in times of uncertainty.
It's basically Balkanisation. When Yugoslavia broke up, everyone was left wondering who would protect them, and the answer was "my own ethnic group". So the Slavs, the Germanics and the ethnic Albanians separated, and the bitterest of wars began. There was no suggestion of skin colour being involved, but the process is absolutely identical to what you feel now.
OK so that's that, but the real question is, what to do about it? Answer is simple.
GO HANG OUT OUTSIDE YOUR OWN ETHNIC GROUP.
Get involved with the international sorts of people who learn languages, who play or listen to music from other cultures, and who have stacks of friends from every nation on earth.
Apart from fixing the issue you mention here, it's also a whole heap of fun. You'll be glad you did.

I would say that your fear is unjustifiable and that as an African American woman I am proud that at least you recognize this and want to explore where your racist beliefs may be coming from. Racism is often taught.... and perpetuated by the society that you live in... when is the last time you volunteered with an organization that serves disenfranchised groups of people or inner city youth? How likely is it that a Black person will harm you, take a job from you, keep you from buying a home, prevent you from getting adequate health care, etc.? If you want psychological help... seek out a good mental health clinician that can help you explore and resolve your fears. Good luck.

It all starts with hip hop. Expressing the way how you feel about life. Unfortunately people just took it in the wrong direction and used it violently. So nowadays, everybody is picking up that violent way of life.
It's not black people in general that are violent. Noone is born violent. It's just the violent mentality that people picked up. Nowadays, people all over the world is interested in hip hop, unfortunately the violent version, so that's why everyone has that violenet mentality now. It's not just black Americans bud. You're wrong if you think that.
Not gonna lie, I can't stand negative hip hop, because it's ignorant and it's ******* up people's minds. I'm a black person and I disagree with alot that you said, but I have to agree with yu on one thing, ALOT of black Americans really do act violent. That's no joke. Alot will stand up for themselves and say that they don't, but they do. It's something you see everyday in real life. But it's NOT because of their skin. That's where you're wrong....It's because it's part of their culture nowadays, and other people around the world are picking up that culture too..... Not all black Americans or black people in general have that violent mentality, so don't none of you guys get me wrong here.
If you ever say that black people are violent or dirty or low lifed just because of their skin, then you deserve to get an *** whoopin', but the truth is, it's just their culture. I think it's ignorant, but it's just the way it is. Other people around the world live that way too, so deal with it. It's not just blacks, it's whites too.

Your fear has a lot to do with how blacks and other minorities are represented in the media (this includes the news, TV, movies, etc.) The fear that you have of blacks is probably due to the fact that you may not have much interaction with black people in your life. If you want to overcome this fear get yourself involved in activities that lets you interact with people of different races. This will definitely alleviate a lot of your fears.

You are a very pitiful person. Maybe this ignorant behavior has to do with the way you grew up. Or maybe your still a child and don't really even know what the hell your talking about. Have you ever though that maybe their are many black people who look at you or white people in general with disgust? If you really think about it.....white people are the ones who people should be disgusted with. All the disgusting things that they have done in history and even today. I think that you have nothing to fear but fear itself. I think your just being ignorant.
P.S. For the person who said we are violent you are mental! The majority of rapist are white, the majority of white people are white, the majority of serial killers are white, the majority of sex offenders are white! Does this say anything to you that white people are actually the violent one. When they have problems they also feel like they have to kill themselves and their family. That seems more than a bit crazy to me. It's actually very psychotic! White people just can't suppress the urge to do unexplainable things. These are only facts that I am stating so don't get angry and shoot yourself!

Omg!!! first time ever heard of some thing so unbelievable. Black people is nothing like what you may thing and you should have no fear towards them because not all blacks will hurt you.Don't make the color of people skin freak you up because then people will look at you as a recist which i think you are.And seriously don't mess with a black man/woman because they will seriously mess you up.Some times it hurt me to watch my black people get treated like animal and that wrongs.Because some black's are really nice and would never lay a hand on any one and so respectful. But you won't notice that because you are quickly to judge there skin color and to look within them. One day a black person you save your sorry azz from some thing which a white person would not bother look at you.Just wait we all have our turn, and surly you will.Trust me

That's interesting you should bring up this subject, I meet a girl this weekend and she travels to peoples home for hair care, she left her husband in the car and when I questioned her about it, she informed me that many of her clients had a problem with it because hes white (shes black) I asked what kind of problem and her response was many of her clients are afraid of him....one was even shivering in there chair....I thought this was ridiculous so i continued to question....she said that many have informed HER that they have a fear of white men because there image (black women) of white men are that they are murderers.....so she doesn't invite him in anymore.....
this peaked me and my girlfriends interest so we sent my son out to invite him in and I found nothing alarming about him....just a guy..
So I shared all this to say....this fear crossing in both directions.....many are afraid of you too......just because of skin color.

I tell you what, if you were really seeking help, you shouldn't have used stuffs like "dirty, less clean, disgust" as a metaphor of black skin, but that helped me figure what psychological advise you might need, every time you see black people close your eyes & run fast.

This guy sounds sincere to me, and I think he's looking for honest answers. But it's no wonder he's afraid of black people, just look at some of the violent answers you gave him. YOU PROVED HIS POINT WITH YOUR OWN ANSWERS! Now can you understand why he feels threatened by blacks?
"Say exactly what you said to a Black person and I bet he/she will kick your sorry azz."
"don't mess with a black man/woman because they will seriously mess you up"
"...probably decide to put a foot in your butt."
