John Steinbeck's East of Eden vs. Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude. If you've read both (i personally read the second in spanish) you may have noted that they are similar in that each tells the history of a family through time. I found marquez's incredibibly boring, while Steinbeck's was so great i was terribly sad that the book had ended. What do you think?

I am now 56. I read East of Eden when I was 14 on a very boring family holiday in Norfolk. I read One Hundred Years of Solitude much later (I think I was in my 40s). The Steinbeck remains in my memory, the other one does not. But is that due to age? I think not. I think Steinbeck is very good, although i suppose he is rather 'masculinist'. But that, I'm afraid, does not bother me. Just who is the better? For me, Steinbeck.

I actually liked both a lot. I tried to read 100 Years in Spanish, but gave up after about 50 pages (it just goes to show you that you shouldn't be taught Spanish by a Swedish lady!). I think the reason I loved "East of Eden" so much was because it was a surprise. I'd read many Steinbeck books, but was never impressed with any of them (with the exception of "Of Mice and Men"). "100 Years" was so intricate and detailed that I was impressed with the amount of effort it must have taken to weave it all together.

I've readand enjoyed both, they have a similar theme but are so dramatically different. I've read 100 years once and East of Eden many times so Steinbeck wins!

I have not yet read East of Eden, but I have read One Hundred Year's of Solitude (in English) and I thought it was amazing. Sure, there were borign parts, but if you overcome that and reach into the deepness of the novel, it is a fantastic book.
