i once heard an opera version of this where there were some guys singing it in a different language. I assumed this may be the original version and Mariah just remade it.

the guys were probably il divo (v.gud, v. talented) - they wud be singing in spanish/italian methinks. They actually were a re-make - the original artist was Nilsson I think. iTunes probs have it on their store.
