All depends what kind of return you are looking for. If you are looking for a Conservative and safe way to invest, you can use a Money Market, that today are paying about 5% and you can take interests without penalty in a monthly basis. If you decide eventually to change to something else you can do it without penalty. Same thing is true with some Certificate of Deposit, that let you withdraw interest in a monthly basis

It would depend on exactly what you are looking for and how much you want to invest. There is a site called www.prosper.com which allows you to purchase loans to other users and you get higher interest than normally received on other loans. There is also a bigger risk, because you aren't guaranteed that everyone will not default. You do get monthly payments, so you might like this site.

A good bond or preferred stock fund will provide monthly income. Two of my favorites are Vanguard's GNMA fund and Nuveen Preferred and Convertible Income fund 2 buy like a stock from a brokerage company, symbol JQC). These are not a recommendation, just my favorites suitable for me. Do you own research.
