I'm considering getting my master's in ed psych. Can anyone out there give me advice? I'd like to hear from school counselors. What's involved in the job, is it what you expected...you can also take a look at my last question only 1 person has answered so far. Thanks!

A school counsellor position is to analyze students needs and in what subject he is good at to help him excel in his studies. Also he can guide you towards your goals to attend university at their cost if you can get a position as a supply teacher to begin with. This is how it works in Ottawa Ontario Canada. I am a teacher who specialized in high school drop outs. I was the soul teacher who started this program for all school boards. A counsellor can and should have a good knowledge of child psychology. If you can talk to a counsellor where you live it would be a great step, as in this type of communication I cannot show you the work involved as all files are confidential. Good luck.

Sorry no counselors have responded. Anyway, here's my two cents:

The ratio of counselors to students is discouraging. It is possible the student you saw last month who comes by today you have no recollection of. That's because you see so many, many students that you lose track.

The amount of paperwork thrown at you by school authorities is overwhelming. Schools have limited budgets and when they get some available money, they all too often apply it to reducing teacher-student ratios. Perhaps, you might find a position in a small town with fewer demands outside of counseling. In any case, you're right to ask student counselors about their career.

If I were you, I would call up a school and ask for an appointment with a stduent counselor for advice.
