8x² - 2x - 3

8x² + 4x - 6x - 3

4x(2x + 1) - 3(2x + 1)

(4x - 3)(2x + 1)

8x^2 - 2x - 3

The factors of 8 are:
1 & 8
2 & 4

The factors of -3 are:
-1 & 3
1 & -3

So... you need to multiply one factor of 8 and one factor of 3 and add that to the product of another factor of 8 and factor of 3 to get -2.

So... using 2&4 from 8, and 1 & -3 from 3...
(2 * -3) + (4 * 1) = -6 + 4 = -2

So that's the combination you want, and below is how you need to put it into the equation...

(2x + 1)(4x - 3)

That way, if you use FOIL to re-multiply it, the Outer and Inner terms will be the ones that multiply and add to -2.

It's something that you just have to do by trial-and-error until you get good enough at them to do them in your head.

8x^2-2x-3
=8x^2-6x+4x-3
=2x(4x-3)+1(4x-3)
=(4x-3)(2x+1)
