Kudos to everyone (almost everyone) for using their noodle and expressing sound opinons! Individals in each race commit crime. Individuals in each race are punished too severely and not severely enough. Each race has racists within it. Each race has individuals who feel the hatred from individuals within a different race. We should move our focus past this generalization and concentrate on three things. 1. What are the circumstances of the crime 2. If found guilty, was this individual punished accordingly or too severly? 3. If there's "racial leniency" occuring in the judgement say so or say not. Then I believe the subject should be passed by.... it doesn't matter if one group recieves more leniency than the other ect. It just matters that the leniency occurs period... no matter what color you are. You should be tried and punished according to what you've done... no easy button in sight.
PS Mr. Question Poser.... everyone gets away with crime.

They are not getting away with this crime. The sentancing of the kids who received the felony charges have not yet taken place.
These kids will have stiffer penalty by far. The kids who got off easier deserved to. What happened took place due to a 'group mentality' process- some of those kids are probably shocked that they went as far as they did... but the fact is, they did.
The part that upsets me about this case is that one of the black leaders - (and more in agreement) said they will riot in Long Beach and we had better watch out. A portion of the black population even had a candleight vigel for their black kids who commited the crime down by city hall... ! Well, so far no riot has taken place, thank goodness. I am stunned by the part of the black community who thinks the thugs are being treated wrongly and discriminated against by the law. This part blows me away. It really really does... and it is this part that causes me to feel angry. It does not matter who it is: when someone does wrong they should be punished... and there is no question these kids behaved shamefully. That is what I would like to hear from the black community- the kids behaved wrongly and should be punished for their actions.
I do not have any hatred toward blacks... and believe they have more hatrid towards me, a white person than I would ever feel toward them. I do not however like the 'group think' that goes on within the black community as in the above example of a candle light vigil or the crime of them always killing each other-- somewhere it has to stop.... The only place change can begin to take place is within each individual and in the family. Racist white folk need to change too, if not for themselves- for our society.
Addendum: It amazes me to see the predjudiced whites out here.. in the eyes of the Lord, no man has any more respect than another- He loves us all equally-
we should follow His lead.

Yep I guess that explains it
and Im guessing this is another reason race realtions are so warm and fuzzy:
Voice
The 49-year-old father of three was walking home from his niece's bridal shower on sunday when three men with reported ties to white supremacist groups allegedly abducted him. Police say they chained him to their pickup [truck] and dragged him more than three kilometers down a winding, asphalt road, tearing off his head and his right arm. . . . Such crimes do not spring from a vacuum. They are stoked in the everyday acceptance of racial intolerance. that's why it's so disconcerting to hear the folk of Jasper express surprise that a racial crime could happen in their "quiet country town...." Unlike years ago, the crime has been pursued aggressively and prosecutions will occur. In that regard, it's progress. But the old demons of hatred based on what a person looks like continue their grip. Even as the nation enters a new century, it's too easy and glib to shake our heads and pretend that what happened to James Byrd, junior, couldn't still happen anywhere.

Here's a link to a story about a WHITE minister's daughter who helped 16-year old girls hook up with adult Natl Guardsmen for sex. PLUS the woman was having an affair with a married man and one of her own STUDENTS!
Cheerleaders. Soldiers. Booze. Sex.
A National Guard recruiting mission gone awry shakes a small South Carolina town to its core.

I think that's an unfair and broad generalization about all white people. They don't all hate black people, that's rediculous.
It doesn't matter what color anyone is - people hurt other people - people get away with things or get off easier sometimes. Why does it have to be about race?

Here we go, again....
Even though I am not convinced that these young men committed a crime, there are people EVERYWHERE who get away with it. I mean, politicians claim they have problems with alcohol, just like Bush did when confronted with his DWI.
Martha Stuart is still as rich as ever, too.
Some of the suspected former Nazis got away, too.
Stuff like this happens
