If so, what should I do about the gun, because I don't want to be accused of anything illegal.

It really depends on where you are.
The US Federal Government has no law preventing it, but your state or local municipality might.

You will have to check with your local law enforcement shooting a gun in almost any city is prohibited if your in the country and you have alot of property i wouldn't see a problem we use to target practice on my parents property all the time but this was back in the 70's and laws have changed alot since then..But we were using real guns sorry a BB gun you still need to check with law enforcement because they may see you with it and hard telling what they may do because police may think its real.

In most jurisdictions, a BB gun is not a firearm. However, check with you local law enforcement to be sure. They should be happy to help a young shooter start off right. BTW, good job for thinking of your neighbors property before shooting.

It would all boil down to State, County, and Municipality rules...

Discharging a firearm or BB gun in San Mateo County, California will get you sent to jail...

In Calaveras County, California: IF you are outside of incorporated areas and meet sight-line, backstop, and other requirements it's perfectly legal.

We have a 100 & 200 yard rifle range, 30/50 yard pistol line... and always carry bb-pistols to plink at the damned gophers !!

Check the ordinances in your community. Many of them have laws against shooting a firearm within 500 feet of an occupied dwelling. If your community has a law like this, you're breaking the law even if you're on your own property.

You can do whatever you want on your own property. I have shot guns at targets on my property before. Especially if it is bb gun than that would be just fine. Just make sure you do not shoot at anyone.

No. A fire arm yes, especially if you are within a jurisdiction that prohibits the use. However compressed air projectiles as well as flung projectiles are allowed a lot of leeway.

As long as you are outside of whatever minimum safe distance your local jurisdiction has designated from adjoining houses, buildings, etc... and as Long as you have taken steps to make sure overshots and ricochets cannot harm bystanders.
