You don't have to use a condom during your "week off." However, if you are not in a monogamous relationship, or you have both had other sexual partners and not been tested for STDs, then you should use a condom to prevent the spread of STDs.

I use to use the patch myself so i know that they only give 3 patches per box for one month. You have to take the patch off the week your suppose to start your period and leave it off until the following week or it will mess up the entire month. If your going to have sex the week that your going to start then use a condom. If not you'll end up paying the pharmacy for the extra patch that you'll need so you wont get pregnant.

You should use a condom EVERYTIME you have sex unless you are absolutely certain that your partner does not have an STD, HIV or HPV. There are NO birth control methods on the market today (pills, patches, iuds, diaphrams, creams, etc) that are 100% effective ANYTIME you have unprotected sex you run the risk of not only catching a disease but becoming pregnant as well.
