Here's the(hypothetical) scene; You are enjoying a picnic in a secluded spot, with your partner and child, you are briefly removed from the scene, e.g you realised you left the radio on in the car and go to turn it off, on your return you find your partner and child are both being threatened by armed kidnappers. Who (please to God you never have to or have had to) are you going to try and rescue first and why?

How about if I add, all logic aside!?

When this question was first put to me,many, many moons ago I might add, it grieved me terribly (blast my bleeding heart) I so needed to be able to save both my best beloveds..To have to CHOOSE!!!? the thought of it just brought me to my knees. With age, I now, thankfully see things a little differently. Still, there is a side of me that won't give up on the fantastic and unrealistic option. It is so easy to be glib when sitting in the comfort of our own 4 walls, not that I think any less of these, as was said, we really can't know how we would react in such a moment and those that 'reacted' wittily I have no doubt, would do all within thier power to save the situation, as we all would try to do. For myself, I have this mental image of me becoming this whirling, screaming, almighty devil type creature, that can, by the powers of my sudden supernatural strength, snatch my best beloveds out of harms way,at the same time, give the baddies the biggest hiding of thier life! I know,,,but?

wow, good question.my instincts say try to rescue both, but if thats not possible,i would have to say the child.why,i don't know.i guess if i was the partner getting kidnapped,i would want the child saved first, worry about me later.i would have a better chance than the child of escaping later on.i guess it comes back to the old saying"live to fight another day".

What are they armed with? If there are two and each have a gun then neither. If I tried to save one then both would likely end up dead. I'm not a freaking movie star where I could magically grab the arm just as they person shoots and make them shoot their partner and have the gun fall out of that one's hand. I'm going to see what I can do to keep both safe and alive and what the kidnappers want.

my child having tried if at all possible to signal to my partner. I know they would give up their life for our child as I would. Hopefully we could act together and all get out . Though thinking about it I might wait and watch. Have I got a mobile (cell phone)?Have I got a signal? Have I got access to transport? I want them both and I would like to inflict as much harm on those hurting them as is humanly possible. Actuallly I'd like to hurt them much more than that and see that they never had an opportunity to hurt anyone else. I don't beleive in the death penalty so I probably am completely insane and you will have to disregard this answer

instinctively id say my child, but no one knows how they would really react unless they are in a given situation , but id like to think that as i am behind the robbers and near my car that i would get in my vehicle and drive straight at them, they will already be rushing on adrenalin because of what they are doing, i do not think they will have the presence of mind to stay put or shoot/stab or injure the people they are threatening when they have a car heading straight for them,

I wouldn't have to worry about it. My hubby is 14 yrs in the Army. I would come back and find the kidnappers all splintered all over the grass.
But...to answer your question correctly...my child.

Most people would say the child but possibly the adult , so you could gang up on the kidnapper. Hopefully, no one has to deal with this scenario.

You haven't a chance against two armed kidnappers who have hostages. You must count them both as already lost, and if they survive it will be a wonderful surprise for you. But count them as lost already, or your will to act will be paralyzed. You can't attack them directly, but maybe you can let the air out of their vehicle's tires, or remove the battery, or otherwise sabotage their transportation. Maybe you can poison their food without their noticing it, which would force them either to abandon their hostages to seek medical attention for themselves. Then you could rescue them, if they were still alive, or call the police to avenge them, if they were dead.

My child. Although horrid situation as you say. Hope would never have to choose!!!
Even worse what if on a boat with your 2 children (none of which can swim) - they fall overboard - which one would you go for??
God I'll give myself nightmares about that now!

My child she can't defend herself where my partner has a better chance of defending himself.

Hope I am never put into a situation like this.

My child. I gave birth to him and he deserves to have a long, healthy life just like I have. I would hope to God that my husband got out of it alive!
