Yesterday in PE we were playing basketball, and i got to wondering, "Why are bastket balls orange?"

Yes i know they come in differents color today, but traditionally they're orange

When James Naismith first invented the game, he used peach crates for baskets. As such, he thought it would be natural to use an orange-colored ball thus causing many in the South to refer to it as "peachball" during the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Because nothing rhymes with orange!! All kidding aside. The first basketballs were made from pigskin... which is naturally orange in color.

cuz basketballs used to be made of pigskin and it is easier to see in a game. u dont see many orange colored away of home jerseys besides phoenix's alternate do u?

They're also easier to spot. I mean you wouldn't want a dark brown basketball, you'd just get hit in the head throughout the game. = )
