Well as you know the world revolves around money, and the music industry isn't making a cent off the "illegal" downloads. So there concerned since they are losing millions of dollars a year since people are now downloading their songs for free instead of buying there CD's. This has been taken to court many times. The rule made was it WAS and IS legal to download songs but keep them in its shared folder, once it was removed from there (like burnt on CD, or placed on a MP3 or anywhere else on the computer) it was illegal. This way people no longer fancied buying CD's which caused the music industries a major loss since their most major income is through CD's. The movie industry is taking the same intiative since movies are now being widely transfered over the net. So over the next decade or so you will find CD's with an encryption similar to the ones used by the movie industry and US Department of Defense. So I urge to STOP downloading illegal music since it will lead to a huge consequence and imprision MANY people who have downloaded songs.

KRUNCH is correct. Basically though, you can make your own copy of a CD for backup purposes or to play the music on your MP3 player, jukebox, or other media player.

If you provide those copies to someone, either knowingly or not, you are liable for copyright violations. (The not knowingly part is such that even though you didn't actually give the media to someone, you've made it freely available to them without taking reasonable care to protect it.)

If you download commercial music or files from a torrent or such without paying for it, you are also in violation of copyright laws.

Well firstly, it is illegal to share or distribute copyrighted material such as an MP3 or any other file-type, simply because there is not money going back to the original source.
