The integrated circuit. No modern electronics would work without them and there would be no internet.

Every "great invention" of the last century has its flip side; modes of transport are now, quite literally, costing the earth; electrical gadgets, which include the internet, are sucking the lifeblood out of communication. (Why am I writing this?)
If we simplify invention to a common thread, we find that anything which is responsible for improving our general condition ,could at any instant be the greatest invention of all time - when it gets considered at a personal level - which begs the question: "Why bother with surveys in the first place?"

Of the 20th Century, i would say it was computers and the internet. Nothing has changed our socity more than these.
The electric lightbulb, telephone, and automonbile are also considered to be some of the greatest inventions, but those were in the 19th century.

I did hear of such a survey taken in France and it was overwhelmingly found to be the invention of the dishwasher.
Am rather inclined to agree.
Go along with the internet as well tho.

I'm going to disagree with most of the answers. I do not think it is anything computer related. The impact of computers is grossly exaggerated and ill-understood mostly because we are in the midst of that impact. We are dazzled by the toys on our desks. My vote goes for the oral contraceptive. The impact on personal behaviour, gender roles and demographics has been and continues to be stupendous and is well documented and understood.

I agree with the guy who asked the question. The internet would be among the top inventions of all time. It has revolutionized commerce, industry, entertainment, you name it, the internet has affected it. Otherwise, we would not be here in this forum answering and learning from these interesting questions.

There are certainly a lot of possibilities -- airplanes would have to be high on the list. But my own pick would be the transistor. People have made more transistors than anything else -- ever, and they have utterly revolutionized the way we live.

I would have to say fiber optics. Fiber optics is what the internet runs on. AT&T replaced all of their underground cables with fiber optics, and shut down all of their microwave sites thus saving lots of energy.
