It should come pretty easy. Just on a side note, the metal and emo scenes are commonly mistaken for goth when they are actually entirely different.

That said, if you need some inspiration, you might want to look towards the fashions of classic goth rock bands such as Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy or newer bands like Redemption. You may also want to see how the fans of goth rock bands dress.

A word of caution: stay away from the wide-legged bondage pants at Hot Topic, no one in the actual goth scene wears them and you will probably be seen as a wannabe. This isn't to say that you can't or shouldn't shop at Hot Topic but most of the stuff they carry aren't actually goth and many goths can't stand the place.

I really don't know what other advice to offer other than be yourself. Your personal tastes are what make you goth so either you are or you aren't, if you find yourself struggling to fit in then you may want to reevaluate your personal interests and see if you may not be part of another subculture.

Humans are a strange species that way. Like no other ! Goths are no different than other identity groups. It's a uniform. Look at the rebel groups going back. Poser, emo, goth, new wave, punk, new age, mods, disco, hippies, bikers, grease ball, beatniks, flappers. They are just people looking to identify. So a style develops. This applies across the board. business suit, soldiers, Police, securities. Cultures do this also, natives, india, middle east, slovak, german, russian, asian, Hawaiian. we all do with Trends, fashions, styles SO you see where all pretty much... as alike, as different ! Goth dress like Goths to Identity with their group!

The word "Goth" covers a lot of ground and almost two millennia: from the marauding Germanic tribes of the second century, to pointy European cathedrals and haunting American literature, all the way to the "dark" fashion and music that still gets confused with devil worship.

The Gothic architecture that evolved in Europe between the 12th and 16th centuries--vaulted ceilings, gargoyles, pointed arches--did actually get its name from the Germanic tribes. Italian Renaissance writers apparently thought those cathedrals were ugly and chose to blame them on the barbarians who had done battle with the Roman Empire about a thousand years earlier.

But what better setting than a Gothic-style medieval castle for the dark, scary Gothic literature that developed much later, with the stories of Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and "Dracula"?

Ghoulish encounters with vampires and other living dead gave the characters of Gothic literature a bad case of anti-social behavior--a stigma (or sign of prestige) that endures in modern Goth culture: moody, punk-inspired music, first presented by Siouxsie & The Banshees and Bauhaus, and the black-and-white death tones of Goth fashion.

One of the latest blows to the Goth reputation followed the Columbine High School shootings in 1999; the killers were reported to have worn dark trench coats and listened to angsty rocker Marilyn Manson. Wrongly perceived as Goth, they were explained away as worshippers of evil--and members of the Goth community weren't pleased.

Knowlege is power...remember that.

buy all black clothes. only wear accessories that are black and red. wear a lot of eye liner. Always act like your depressed and be fascinated with death. Listen to Marilyn Manson. Wear big black boots. You have to be against almost everything that non goths do. The things that non-goths think is weird or nasty you must think is cool. Wear chains on your clothes. And get plenty of piercings. pierce every flap of skin or cartilage that you can grip. get an account on VampireFreaks. com. oh yeah claim that you are a vampire.

Worry about getting to 15 years old first, then you can focus on faking an image later.

shouldn't becoming goth be kind of a non-conscious decision? i mean, that's just the kind of style you like, so you should just be yourself with it and not try too hard to fit yourself into a mold.
